The First Word

It is easy to assume that everything in life can be customized. A simple order of oatmeal on a coffee shop app often arrives bare because you are expected to punch in every single customization yourself. Our culture treats human identity the exact same way. We are told to choose our own truth and build our own reality. Researchers call this expressive individualism.

But being the boss of your own life is exhausting. When you have to invent your own meaning, you can never stop performing. Genesis 1:1-2 takes us back to the start and reminds us that we do not have to build the world from scratch.

God Owns Everything

The first sentence of the Bible tells us that God created the heavens and the earth. He is the absolute owner of all reality. Jesus is the architect who holds the blueprints for your life.

Many people view God's rules as restrictive. Imagine a wide receiver on a football field who decides he wants the freedom to run his routes out into the parking lot. He thinks the white lines are just opinions holding him back. But the lines are exactly what makes the game possible. Without them, there is no such thing as a touchdown. True freedom is found by staying inside the lines God has drawn.

We Are Empty Without Him

Genesis tells us the earth was without form and void. It was a sterile wilderness. But God is not stressed by mess. He starts with the void so He can fill it with His life-giving word.

If you have ever remodeled a kitchen, you know about demo day. The cabinets are ripped out and the wires are hanging from the ceiling. To an outsider, it looks ruined. But to an architect, that mess is exactly where the work begins. You do not have to clean up your chaos before you come to God. He does His best work in the wasteland.

God Is Close

The text says the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. The word hovering describes a bird protecting and nurturing its young. God is not a cold machine or a distant tyrant. He is a nurturer.

Parents often check on their sleeping children in the dark. The children are completely unaware that their father is standing right there. But his presence means they are safe. That is exactly what the Spirit of God is doing over the empty places of your world right now. You do not have to fix yourself. Stop trying to be the boss and trust the Architect.
