Have you ever noticed what happens when a fire alarm goes off in a crowded building? We rarely rush for the exits immediately. We stop, look around at the people next to us, and wait to see if anyone else is panicking. We instinctively assume it is just a drill or a glitch in the wiring.
We live in a modern culture that operates on that exact same baseline regarding spiritual reality. We function under the dangerous lie of consequence-free living. We assume we can live however we want without paying a price. Genesis 6 crashes right into that comfort zone.
Genesis 6 begins by describing a season of rapid human expansion. But this growth is the backdrop of a terrifying overstepping of boundaries. This is the first time we see a shared, widespread sin of a group. Humanity proudly crossed God-ordained boundaries to grab at power and forbidden pleasure.
This arrogance perfectly mirrors the Johnstown flood of 1889. The wealthy elite at a private hunting club lowered a massive dam to accommodate their big carriages. They assumed the rules of nature did not apply to them. When the rains came, the dam failed and unleashed a wall of water that killed over 2,200 people. Genesis 6 warns us that boundaries cannot be crossed forever without a cost.
God looked down and saw that every intention of the thoughts of man's heart was only evil continually. The original Hebrew word for intention comes directly from the potter's verb to form. Humanity hijacked our creative ability. Man became the potter of his own soul, constantly forming ugly schemes in the workshop of his mind.
Verse 6 says the Lord regretted making man and it grieved Him to His heart. This reveals God's deep sorrow. Human rebellion causes the Creator immense grief and literal pain. Because He is a Father, He experiences the literal suffering of our self-destruction. He is grieved that we are breaking ourselves.
Amidst the rising tide of corruption, Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. Noah's righteousness was the fruit of the favor he had already received. Grace is the engine of his obedience.
God provided specific architectural plans for the ark. He told Noah to cover the vessel with pitch. This word is the root word for atonement. It is the substance that stands between the passenger and the judgment. Salvation is being covered by a provision God specified.
In 2013, a tugboat capsized and sank 100 feet to the ocean floor. A cook named Harrison O'Keene survived in a tiny air pocket for 60 hours. When rescue divers found him, he could not simply swim to the surface because the change in pressure would have been fatal. The divers brought down a diving bell. Harrison had to trust a covering he did not build to carry him through a depth he could not survive on his own.
Jesus Christ is our diving bell. He is the sealed vessel who descended into the depths of our world. Take refuge under His covering today.
